Is Mold Hazardous To Your Health - Common Mold Related Health Problems

Mold is everywhere. Check under the carpet, behind the walls, on the shower tiles, in the coffeepot, and there it is. It?s an unavoidable part of life that can be controlled, but never totally eliminated.

Since we have to live with mold, it is important to be aware of mold related health problems. How can the presence of mold in your home adversely affect you?

While some types of mold contain toxins, most mold is non-toxic and not life-threatening. However, our natural reactions to mold cause many minor irritating problems, and there is some risk for potential long-term trouble.

If you suffer from asthma or any other breathing disorder, mold may be a very serious health risk for you. You should try to keep your home free of mold as well as possible, and talk to your physician about ways to limit the danger.

Here are some common mold related health problems:

Nasal Congestion. Most people are mildly allergic to mold. The most common symptom is a stuffy nose. Even though you do not have a cold, you may get a stuffy nose when you enter certain rooms or houses. If you suddenly get congested in certain parts of your home, this may be an indication that you have some mold growing somewhere that you can?t see.

Headaches. Along with the stuffy nose, many people get headaches. Have you ever gotten a headache when you are in a dusty place? Mold works in the same way. If you have constant headaches for no apparent reason when you are at home, you may have a mold problem.

Itchy or Watery Eyes. Mold produces airborne spores which can irritate different parts of our bodies. Most commonly, these spores get into our nasal cavities or lungs, but they can also irritate your eyes. The symptoms include itchy, red or excessively watery eyes.

Difficulties Breathing. In very severe cases, you may experience a shortness of breath. This would only be the case if you have a serious mold problem. If you are working in an old building or in an exceptionally humid environment, you may experience shortness of breath due mold. In this case, the room needs to be aired out and it may be hazardous for you to spend time there until the mold is under control.

Skin Irritation. In some cases, mold spores may irritate the skin and cause a rash. This is not common, but it does occur.

Asthma. If you have asthma, constant exposure to mold can be a serious health problem. Mold spores will bring on asthma attacks and cause you breathing trouble. If you are asthmatic or especially sensitive to mold, you must keep your environment as mold-free as possible.

It has not been scientifically proven, but many medical professionals believe that continual exposure to mold in childhood may be a factor in developing asthma. For this reason, be extra careful about mold in your home if you have young children.

A Vibrant Paint Job Is Not An Effective Mold Removal Solution

Most everyone will have mold in their homes at some point or another. Mold is a naturally occurring phenomena that has been on Earth for millennia.

What triggers mold growth indoors is the presence of moisture or humidity. Common places where indoor mold grows include the bathroom or basement. If you have had water damage of any kind, you might find mold growth.

Besides allergic reactions and other potential health effects from exposure to indoor mold, mold is just plain ugly. No one wants it in the house.

We might be tempted to just paint over the mold and hope we don't see it again. Unfortunately, that doesn't get rid of the problem. The paint will start to peel and flake off, and you'll see the mold all over again. If the cause of moisture that fed the mold is not removed, no amount of painting will get rid of the problem.

You might need a professional cleaner to remove the mold, but if mold removal is something you'd like to try yourself to save some money, here are some tips (consult with your doctor, first, if you have any health conditions that might be triggered by the mold):

Cleaning Mold from Hard Surfaces

Use detergent and water to scrub mold off hard surfaces and dry the area completely when you're done. If this surface is an area that you will be painting, be sure that it is dry before you paint. Also, make sure that the source of moisture had been corrected.

Cleaning Up Mold Caused by a Sewage Backup or Flood Water

If the mold is caused by water damage from sewage backup or floodwater, disinfect the area by spraying or wiping the area with a diluted bleach solution. This bleach solution should consist of 1 part bleach to 10 parts water. Don't inhale bleach fumes and by all means, do not mix bleach with other chemicals or cleaners because you could create toxic fumes that are much more hazardous than the mold itself. Again, once you have removed the mold, make sure that the area where it was growing is completely dry.

Cleaning up Mold From Absorbent or Porous Material

Unfortunately, moldy absorbent or porous materials such as carpet or ceiling tiles may have to be thrown away. This is because mold can grow on or fill in the empty spaces and crevices of porous material and it may be difficult or impossible to remove the fungus completely.

Cosmetic Damages to Art or Other Items from Mold

Mold can stain or create cosmetic damage to art, furniture, rugs or other items. You might need a furniture repair, carpet cleaning, or restoration specialist to remove the mold and restore your favorite item.

Mold grows from moisture and thrives in humid environments. If you have a roof leak or leaking pipe, fix it as soon as possible so that mold does not have a chance to grow. The rule of thumb is to remove the source of moisture within 24-48 hours and mold will not have a chance to thrive. Be sure to ventilate bathrooms and kitchens. If you have a dank basement or other humid area in your house, you might want to consider installing a dehumidifier or air conditioning unit.

Molds are not only disgusting to look at, but they can also carry a lot of diseases. Exposure to mold can lead to colds, respiratory complications, nasal problems, and sinus congestions. It can also cause sore throats and skin problems. If a family member suffers from asthma, molds can also trigger the attacks. Molds are also known to cause allergies.

In walls or other wood structures, you can remove molds by scrubbing. But do not expect them to be completely gone. You can scrub them or sand them. Make sure that you use protective safety tools when you do this. Clean these stuff in a well-ventilated area, away from other equipments.

Use a commercial disinfectant after you have removed the molds. Bleach and water solution can also be used as disinfectant. The cleaning solution should contain one-fourth bleach for every gallon of water. Apply the solution in the material infected by mold and allow the solution to do its work for fifteen minutes. If there are too much molds in the material, you can use one and a half cup of bleach per one galloon of water. Be sure that you are in a well-ventilated area when cleaning. After several minutes, rinse the area with water and allow the material to dry. You can use fan or dehumidifier if you want them to dry immediately.

Mold - What Causes It And How To Get Rid Of It

Mold. And no, we're not talking about the kind found on 40 year old bread. We're talking about the kind of mold found in your bathroom on the tub tiles and a number of other places you'd never even suspect. In this article we're going to go over the causes of mold and how to get rid of it.

Mold is actually always present in the air and all it needs to trigger it off is a little moisture and a food source. Most surfaces contain all the nutrients that mold will need for it to grow and any dirt on that surface only provides additional fuel for the fire.

Mold is pretty easy to spot even if you can't see it, which is usually white or can even be black. Mold can always be smelled and the odor is rather musty and not at all pleasant. It grows on paper, drywall, wood, paint and wallpaper and many other surfaces that contain sufficient amounts of moisture.

Okay, so if mold is so prevalent just how do we get rid of it or if possible keep it from forming?

The first step in reducing mold (you'll never completely kill it) is to keep things clean. A 1 part to 4 part solution of chlorine bleach and water will kill mold. If you add a detergent to that solution you will also remove dust and dirt. You have to be very careful when disturbing mold spores because they can cause respiratory problems, especially if you are allergic to mold, have asthma or other breathing problems.

The next thing to do is to reduce humidity. In a climate where you have to heat the air in the winter time, this can be a real challenge. Warm air holds much more moisture than cold air. Air conditioning systems can remove the moisture and circulate cool dry air back into the room. Of course if you live in a hot dry climate like Arizona, this isn't that much of a problem. Air movement, through the use of a fan, is another great way of reducing the moisture in the air. Just from cooking and bathing alone you can add as much as 3 gallons of water a day to your home unless you have adequate circulation.

Corners are a common place for mold to grow. Usually because of improper insulation the interior wall can become colder than the air that is inside the room and this causes moisture to form on the surface. The underside of windows is another common location. Humid air will condense on cold windows which will form frost and then go through a cycle by which the moisture will freeze and defrost. This will cause water to drip down underneath the window which is what causes the mold to form and grow and your wall to start rotting.

By following the above procedures, keeping your home cool and dry and cleaning often especially after a bath or shower, you can help prevent mold from taking over your house.
